Agricultural Innovation Highlights -- Secretary Vilsack gave a keynote address at the National Chamber Foundation forum on agricultural innovation recently. A transcript of the Secretary’s address – entitled “Rural America: New Markets, New Understanding, Unlimited Opportunity” – is available here.  In addition, conference proceedings may be accessed at the link below. http://www.uschamber.com/webcasts/agriculture-growing-innovation-opportunities  A key part of the Secretary’s address was about the opportunity to create new markets for production agriculture, local and regional food systems, conservation, and the bio based economy.  In concert with this speech, USDA released a new web site, www.usda.gov/opportunity which highlights new markets and marketing opportunities for producers and businesses.

National SNAP-Ed Report FY2010 -- The national SNAP-Ed report “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) through the Land-Grant University System for FY2010:  A Retrospective Review” is now available. This report was created in response to an identified need to have baseline data for the final year, FY2010, before the changes from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 were enacted. The report was funded by a SNAP-Ed assessment from the Extension Directors/Administrators. It was written by Dr. Julie Sexton of Mississippi State University. Dr. Helen Chipman of NIFA served as the Project Director. The report is valuable in understanding and explaining the Land-Grant University System capacity, commitment, and contribution to SNAP-Ed:  http://msucares.com/archive/2012/snap-ed/snap-ed.html  (To obtain a hard copy please send your mailing address to sandra.jensen@sdstate.edu).

It will include the centennial graphic identity, messaging, and basic templates to be used on a national regional, state and local level. The toolkit will be housed on a Web site hosted by the LSU AgCenter but will have portals linked through ECOP and other key web sites. Committee members will showcase the toolkit and other centennial activities through webinars, presentations at extension conferences and professional organization meetings this year. Other materials will be added to the toolkit throughout 2013.

National 4-H Council Gets Honor (by Andy Ferrin, Chief Marketing Officer) -- National 4-H Council was named to Social Impact Exchange’s first ever S&I 100.  The S&I 100 recognizes the 100 most effective non-profits in America—and was created to help encourage investment in high-impact, high-performing organizations. Each organization on the list demonstrated high levels of effectiveness validated by third-party studies, as well as significant growth potential. The index is an important indicator that 4-H is a wise investment—and is recognition of the proven impact of Cooperative Extension’s high-quality 4-H positive youth development programs.  Learn more about the index at http://www.socialimpactexchange.org/exchange/si-100.
